A proposed physical mechanism for ozone-meteorology correlations using land-atmosphere coupling regimes

چکیده
Correlations between surface ozone and meteorological variables exhibit a north-south gradient over the Eastern United States (US), with the ozoneetemperature correlation weakening and the ozoneehumidity correlation transitioning from positive to negative south of 37 N. Using 17 years of hourly August ozone, nitrogen oxide, and isoprene measurements from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality System and Photochemical Assessment Measurement Stations and hourly meteorological fields from the North American Land Data Assimilation System (Phase 2), we propose that the north-south transition and widely observed ozoneehumidity correlation results from a shift in the soil moisture-atmosphere coupling regime. Due to soil water limitations over the Southeast, evapotranspiration and specific humidity increase following precipitation events, and this coincides with reductions in temperature and ozone precursors. Therefore, the negative ozoneehumidity correlation in the Southeast is likely a manifestation of several meteorological factors directly influencing ozone production. Surface drying, as defined by the evaporative fraction, provides a better predictor of O3 than temperature, specific humidity, or radiation for the Southeast due to its ability to retain prior precipitation information and reflect sameday atmospheric conditions relevant to O3 production. Behavior of surface fluxes and coupling may be particularly relevant for prediction of seasonal and future O3 air quality, and further investigation into the links between landeatmosphere coupling and O3 is necessary. 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Impact of Amazonian deforestation on atmospheric chemistry
[1] A single-column chemistry and climate model has been used to study the impact of deforestation in the Amazon Basin on atmospheric chemistry. Over deforested areas, daytime ozone deposition generally decreases strongly except when surface wetness decreases through reduced precipitation, whereas nocturnal soil deposition increases. The isoprene and soil nitric oxide emissions decrease althoug...

متن کاملLand-atmosphere coupling and European climate change
We provide an overview on recent results investigating the role of land-atmosphere coupling, and in particular of soil moisture-temperature coupling, for summer climate variability and climate change in Europe. Increasing greenhouse gas concentrations are expected to enhance the interannual variability of summer climate in Europe and other mid-latitude regions, potentially causing more frequent...
متن کاملA model intercomparison analysing the link between column ozone and geopotential height anomalies in January
A statistical framework to evaluate the performance of chemistry-climate models with respect to the interaction between meteorology and column ozone during northern hemisphere mid-winter, in particularly January, is used. Different statistical diagnostics from four chemistry-climate models (E39C, ME4C, UMUCAM, ULAQ) are compared with the ERA-40 re-analysis. First, we analyse vertical coherence ...
متن کاملENSO’s Phase Locking to the Seasonal Cycle in the Fast-SST, Fast-Wave, and Mixed-Mode Regimes
The physical mechanism underlying ENSO’s phase locking to the seasonal cycle is examined in three parameter regimes: the fast-SST limit, the fast-wave limit, and the mixed SST–wave dynamics regime. The seasonal cycle is imposed on simple ordinary differential equation models for each physical regime either as a seasonal ocean– atmosphere coupling strength obtained from the model of Zebiak and C...
